Our community offers spectacular scenery, lakes and rivers. The Beartooth Mountains have the highest concentrations of pristine alpine lakes in the world. The Clarks Fork River has been designated one of the few "wild and scenic rivers". We are at an altitude of 7600 feet. The seasons offer endless enjoyment. The Northeast entrance to Yellowstone National Park is just 4 miles away. Ask the owner's about the wonderful wildlife and bird viewing, especially in Yellowstone. See wolves, grizzlies, black bears, elk, bison, coyotes, foxes, moose, mule deer, pronghorn and bighorn sheep. A large variety of migratory birds pass through in the fall and spring. Many nest here in the spring and summer, including mallards, mountain bluebirds, sparrows, warblers, and eagles. Among the year round residing birds are the chickadees, stellar jays, great horned owls, woodpeckers, and eagles. Within Cooke City we have outfitters and guide services for fishing and fly-fishing, trail rides and pack trips. There are trips for sightseeing and photography. Float trips on the Yellowstone River and backcountry area lakes are available. All this can be done in Yellowstone Park or the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness area. There is big game hunting in September and October in Montana and Wyoming. We also have snowmobile - ATV service, sales, and rentals. |

For winter fun we (Cooke City) are constantly ranked very high overall by Snowest's 'Guide to Western Snowmobiling'. We are almost always ranked at the top for our extreme terrain and our snow. We have some of the best hillclimbing in the west. If you want to test your manhood or maybe just your horsepower give us a try. Please, always be aware of your surroundings, be avalanche smart, practice with your gear and know how to use it! Cooke City receives an average of 500 inches of snow depth a year. This all creates a sledders paradise. There are plenty of other things to do in winter also. Just to name a few are snowmobiling, skiing, snow shoeing, and ice fishing. Once again you can snowmobile or do any of these activities right from your door In summer make us your headquarters for ATV'ing, wildlife watching, fishing, hiking, cycling, or horseback trips. You can ATV or hike right from your motel room onto trails in the Gallatin and Custer National Forests. Beartooth Highway from Cooke City to Red Lodge, Montana was rated by Charles Kuralt as one of the most scenic drives in the United States. It is an All-American highway. The Chief Joseph Scenic Highway from Cooke City to Cody, Wyoming is another beautiful drive. Along either of these two Hwys you could spend days hiking, fishing, riding ATV's, and the list goes on. |
